The first tracks of the Hugel Family are traced back to the 15th century. Two centuries later, Hans Ulrich Hugel settled in Riquewihr which was devastated by the Thirty Years War. In 1639, as a free citizen, he took the reins of the strong Corporation of Winegrowers. In 1672, his son built a wonderful winery in Rue des Cordiers. The family crest was carved above the door, which was the origin of the company's logo that is still used today. During 18th and 19th century, the Hugel Family gained an enviable reputation for their winegrowing skills and for the meticulous way in which they cultivated the vineyards. In 1902 Frédéric Emile Hugel left the old family property, and created new premises situated in the center of Riquewihr, that still form the heart of the company. His son, Jean, continued the vision of his father and through hard work and perseverance, proved that Alsace wines deserve a place among the finest wines of the world. His three sons, Georges, Jean και André, have strictly followed the same course, obtaining official recognition for Alsace late-harvest "Vendange Tardive" and "Selections de Grains Nobles" wines.
The next generation, consisting of 5 people coming from the 11th and the 12th generation, is faithfully following its heritage, with the noble mission to make Alsace wine the great white wine of the 21st century.
Gewürztraminer is a distinctive aromatic variety that gives delightful wines that can be enjoyed on their own. Hugel express Gewürztraminer through a drier version. The grapes are selected manually, in small tubs, from 12 vineyards with soils of clay and limestone. The presses are filled by gravity, without any pumping or other mechanical intervention. After pressing, the must is decanted for a few hours and then fermented in temperature-controlled barrels or vats at 18-24°C. The wine is racked only once, before natural clarification during winter. The following spring, the wine is lightly filtered just before bottling. Then, the bottles are aged in the cellars until released for sale.
