The local tradition and the distillation process date back to 1922, when refugees from Asia Minor settles in Nea Ionia and brought along the habit of tsipouro with seafood, as they had boats and was fishing this kind of viands. Faithful to their old habits and lifestyle, after work they would gather to taverns, the so called "tsipouradika", where they sipped the traditional tsipouro from Smyrna, distilled with great care and passion.
Over time, the locals also joined them, and they were slowly initiated into the secret recipes and method of preparation.
Nowadays, tsipouro is considered to be the traditional drink of the region making the perfect accompaniment to seafood delicacies, while the "tsipouradika" continue to be a meeting point, for all kind of people, for over a century. At their tables coexist ordinary and unordinary people, youngsters and eldest, rockers and anarchists, rich and poor, workers, fishermen, business executives, everyday women and extraordinary women.
