“IDAIA”: The fist name of ancient Crete. Idaia was the mother's name of the ten Kouretes. Her husband Zeus, king of Crete, wanted to honour his wife by naming the whole island "Idaia".
The company's trademark is the eight leaves daisy, which comes from the Faistos plate. Ancient Greeks used to believe that symbolizes the Sirius star. That emblem is often found in ancient Greek findings. daisy
Idaia winery is located in Venerato, a charming village at the heart of the Makevizi' district vineyards.
It is a part of the appellation Dafnes area, one of the biggest wine producing areas of Crete.
It was a wine-producing center during the Venetian rule times, something that is proved by the ancient and roman curved winepresses that have been found.
It is worth to mention that Malevizi region, was renowned for its famous sweet wines.
A family winery
Idaia is a family winery, that was founded in 1998, by the oenologists Vasili Ladero and Kalliopi Volitaki.
Their vision is to respectfully provide their own small contribution to the long history of Cretan wine and to connect their lives with its values.
The careful handling of the grapevine, from the first until the last moment, has as a goal to feature the personality of Cretan varieties that transfuses the identity of each wine.
The varieties and the climate
The vineyards of the area, are located at 500 meters altitude above the sea level. The repousse of the area and the rich loess, loamy soils in combination with the particular microclimate that is formed by the summer Aegean breeze, create the perfect conditions for the creation of quality wines.
The main local varieties used, are: Red Cretan varieties like kotsifali, liatito, mandilari and white ones like Vidiano, Vilana and Thrapsathiri.
The colour is bright crystal with yellow and green tinges. The bouquet is an excellent combination of jasmine and night flower aromas with fruity notes of melon and nectarine. The palette is creamy and balanced leading to a crispy aftertaste.

An attractive rose from Moscato Spinas and red varieties of Crete being processed as mixture and not separately. Balanced flavour, dominated by flower blossoms like hyacinth and jasmine, citrus and fruits like peach and apricot. Impressive freshness, flawless balanced acidity and long aftertaste.
The colour is deep red. The palette is rich characterized by ιntense aromas of red fruits, that harmoniously coexist with those of vanilla from the barrel. The fresh acidity and a pleasant aftertaste bring to fruition this wonderful wine.
