THE LEGACY
GRAN CENTENARIO, Mexico’s No. 1 tequila, and internationally awarded, has been personified the Mexican tradition and heritage for centuries. Founded in1857 by Lazaro Gallardo, the very first tequila master distiller in history.
THE LEGENT
Fearful of the plagues and cold weather that might threaten the agave plants, legend tells us that Lazaro entrusted an angel to protect the crops, carrying a trumpet to alert him of any danger.
THE HISTORY
In 1857 Lazaro Gallardo, started the creation of tequila using an innovative and proprietary process called Selección Suave™, which consists of blending newly rested tequilas with the smoothest aged reserves, to yield a rich and complex profile. the richest and smoothest tequilas to yield a product of exceptional quality and taste. Gallardo names his tequila Gran Centenario to commemorate the start of a new century and begins selling it at his tavern.
In 1920 Lázaro’s son, Luciano, begins to bottle Gran Centenario. He creates the distinctive Art Deco bottle design that is still used until today. The bottle is adorned with “The Angel of Independence,” inspired by the Mexican Centenario gold bullion coin, minted to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mexico’s independence in 1910.
Today Gran Centenario remains a family-owned business and carry on the same traditions that were established by Lázaro Gallardo more than 150 years ago.
